Brit Muslim MP's peerage blocked by the taxman

Mohammad Sarwar

The House of Lords appointments commission, which advises the Prime Minister whether nominees meet the “highest standards of propriety”, refused to approve Mohammad Sarwar’s peerage on the advice of the tax authorities.
Mr Sarwar had been proposed by Gordon Brown in his resignation honours list in May, but HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said they could not support the Labour donor’s nomination.
The former Glasgow Central MP, worth an estimated £16 million, said the “problems” have been resolved and the taxman’s objections lifted, but refused to say what they were.
However, the refusal is embarrassing for Mr Brown and the Labour Party. Mr Sarwar was instrumental in helping drum up support for the party among the Muslim population.
The 58-year-old had been expecting join other senior Scottish Labour politicians in the House of Lords...

Barack Obama:

the Great Unravelling of a One-Term President?

Obama has even lost Shepard Fairey, the man who created the iconic red and blue "Hope" poster of Obama's visage. Those who elected Obama, he said this week, feel cheated. "They wanted somebody who was going to fight against the status quo and I don't think that Obama has done that."

Europe votes in law to send back illegal Afghans, Pakistanis

STRASBOURG: Europe voted today a controversial deal to send back thousands of illegal Afghan and Pakistani immigrants.
The "re-admission agreement" passed by the European parliament after years of negotiations with Islamabad is intended to ensure such returns meet international rules on human rights protections.
About 13,000 Pakistani nationals were picked up in Europe in 2008 without correct paperwork, according to the Strasbourg-based parliament.
It did not have figures for Afghan immigrants in a similar situation, who invariably pass through Pakistan.

Anwar al Awlaki: the new Osama bin Laden?

You may not have heard of him before – but this is the new face of international terrorism. His name is Anwar al Awlaki – and unlike Osama bin Laden, who has not been seen in public for many years, he is loud, obvious and very dangerous. If there is an attack any time soon in London or in another Western capital, the chances are that Awlaki will be behind it. The CIA has put him on their hit-list of assassination targets, and in a rare speech on Thursday, Jonathan Evans, the head of MI5, name-checked Awlaki as the West’s Public Enemy No 1.
